Durin's Bane by Grrrod Durin's Bane by Grrrod
I'm not sure how Durin (IV?) met his end in Tolkien lore as i've not read all the books, if it's even in the books, so this may be inaccurate... do I care? No.

Sketch done to pass the time over a couple of dinner-breaks at work. I wanted to draw something red and angry.

Great Job!!!!

About Durin VI:
"The Dwarves delved deep at that time, seeking beneath Barazinbar for mithril, the metal beyond price that was becoming yearly ever harder to find. Thus they aroused from sleep a thing of terror that, flying from Thangorodrim, had lain hidden at the foundations of the earth since the coming of the Host of the West: a Balrog of Morgoth. Durin was killed" (Durin's Folk, LOTR Appendix).

So, Balrog appears from the dephts and kills Durin VI (who was the "boss" of Miners of Dwarf-King, so he was there).
However, anything about how he dies specifically.

Like many have already commented I have not found any detailed description how Durin VI was killed. All what Tolkien told us was that in T.A. 1980 Balrog killed him. During the following year his son Nain I was also killed by the Balrog and dwarves fled Khazad-dm.

That aside this is a very nice image of the last moments of Durin.

you defo achieved red and angry, like it a lot. As for the books, its never specified how Durin dies as far as I know, so nice interpretation.

Absolutely fantastic. There's so much I love about this picture, but mostly it's Durin's expression- somewhere between resolute and accepting that this is his time to go. Absolutely magnificent, well done to you indeed!

I am not sure whether Tolkien was actually specific about Durin's death, so you really don't have to care. In my opinion, you've done a great job and I can easily imagine it to have happened exactly the way you depicted it. Takes a dwarf to face a balrog like this! :D

Great picture! I love it! :-)
